Japanese Research Lesson DVD: 4th Grade Perimeter and Area

Price: $44.95

See an actual research lesson taught by one of the most distinguished elementary mathematics teachers in Japan, Mr. Hiroshi Tanaka, and the post lesson discussion. This 4th grade lesson on the topic of Perimeter and Area was taught at the University of Tsukuba Attached Elementary School on July 22, 2006. The DVD contains an edited version of the research lesson (24 min.) and the post-lesson discussion (56 min.). (The original length of the lesson was about 45 minutes.)

In this lesson, 4th grade students were asked to solve following problem:

"There are five shapes that have equal areas. Which one has the longest perimeter?"

In this video you can see how an experienced Japanese lesson study practitioner conducts a research lesson and how students respond. In addition, you can observe how Japanese teachers carry out a post-research lesson discussion with their colleagues. This DVD provides a window for understanding how Japanese teachers observe, analyze, and discuss lessons. It is a great resource for math teachers, lesson study practitioners and groups, school and district-wide professional development activities, education professors, and researchers.

The lesson plan and Mr. Tanaka’s opening statement at the beginning of the post-lesson discussion can be downloaded for free at the Resources section of this website: http://www.globaledresources.com/resources.html.
